Santa Cruz Courthouse, 701 Ocean St Come have breakfast and support the Highway 6! FOOD NOT BOMBS STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FOR THE Highway 6 It is with strong admiration for the actions of the HWY 6 that Food Not Bombs, both of Santa Cruz and of the international movement, states its unconditional support for the six student-activists who put their lives on the line on March 3rd, 2015 on Highway 17 in protest of both excessive tuition hikes in the University and the terrorism of rampant police brutality which targets communities of color. Food Not Bombs as an international movement is committed to undermining any and all systems of power which seek their profits through violence and coercion. We recognize the inherent violence in disaccessing individuals from their rights to be educated by excessively raising the cost of tuition beyond the means of most students; this system privileges individuals with the economic resources to pay tuition over those who would be indebted by student loans for the rest of their lives should they choose to attend college. Furthermore, Food Not Bombs sees the intersectionality between the struggles of students to access their educations in the face of economic exploitation and those of communities across the nation who have stood up to state-sanctioned terror as part of Black Lives Matter. The system which perpetuates economic injustice through the mounting of student debt peonage is the same system which perpetuates police tyranny and brutality, both oppressions which primarily target people of color. Food Not Bombs stands with the HWY 6 in recognition that both oppressions have reached a point of crisis. We have deep respect for the completely non-violent act of civil disobedience these students risked their freedom for, and are honored to have these student-activists as members of our community. These students have placed themselves in a proud tradition of non-violent resistance, a tradition that history will always seek to appropriate while the state will always seek to repress and silence those brave enough to resist. We condemn both the academic sanctions as well as the criminal charges these students now face as a scapegoating of their free speech. And all for what? A few extra hours in traffic? Although this action was inconvenient for some, suffice it to say that the dual terrors of police murder and debt peonage are graver matters altogether. In Solidarity, Food Not Bombs June 8, 11, 18, 25 2015, 10:00am - 11:30am Emergency Breakfast Hwy 1 and Route 9 Come join us for breakfast to protest the criminalization of the homeless and the unjust laws in Santa Cruz. January 27, 2015, 4:30pm RALLY and PRESS CONFERENCE AT CITY COUNCIL THIS TUESDAY!!!! Santa Cruz City Hall courtyard, 809 Center Street, Santa Cruz SCRAM! (Santa Cruz Resistance Against Militarization!) will hold a press conference and rally about the City Council’s recent approval of SCPD’s request to purchase a Lenco BearCat, a military-style Armored Personnel Carrier. The press conference and rally will be held in the Santa Cruz City Hall courtyard on January 27, 2015 at 4:30 pm. SCRAM! will be revealing important evidence that they have uncovered through research and interviews. This new evidence calls into question some of the key representations that SCPD made to the City Council to justify the BearCat purchase. Immediately following the press conference and rally, SCRAM! members and others will address the City Council during the public comment period. SCRAM! is a new group of citizen-activists who are concerned about the increasing militarization of Santa Cruz law enforcement agencies. Currently, they are working to convince the City Council to rescind the approval of the BearCat purchase. (Facebook Event) Santa Cruz Sentinel, November 11, 2012... "Not everybody in Santa Cruz was happy about Panetta's visit. About two dozen protesters from the Resource Center for Nonviolence, Food Not Bombs and others picketed the event, protesting what they called Panetta's "war crimes and crimes against humanity." Four protesters briefly disrupted the talk when they stood up and unfurled a long paper banner supporting peace and paraded past the stage and along the side of the room."
